The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the Department of Disease Control (DDC) have partnered with various businesses to launch the “Dengue Heroes Towards Zero Death” campaign. This initiative aims to tackle the escalating threat of dengue fever in Bangkok, aligning with the World Health Organization’s goal to eliminate dengue-related deaths by 2030. The campaign’s launch coincides with ASEAN Dengue Day on June 15.
A significant event promoting the campaign was recently held in Din Daeng district, where community members gathered to focus on preventive measures. Efforts included maintaining cleanliness and improving drainage systems, crucial steps to minimize the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes, especially during the rainy season, which is ideal for mosquito proliferation.
From January to May this year, Thailand has reported nearly 30,000 dengue cases, resulting in 29 deaths. The DDC projects that the number of cases could rise to 280 by the end of the year.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt underscored the city’s comprehensive dengue prevention strategies, which include active surveillance, eliminating mosquito breeding sites, and robust community engagement. The campaign has garnered support from various partners, including the Embassy of Japan in Thailand, the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center, and major Thai corporations such as Amata Plc and CP ALL Plc.
Governor Sittipunt emphasized the importance of community involvement and collaboration in combating dengue fever, noting that these efforts are essential for achieving the campaign’s goal of zero dengue-related deaths by 2030. The active participation of local residents and businesses is seen as a critical component in the fight against dengue, ensuring that preventive measures are effectively implemented and sustained.
