Interior Minister Warns Against Recriminalising Marijuana for Recreational Use
Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who played a key role in the decriminalisation of marijuana for medical purposes two years ago, has cautioned that the current government’s move to recriminalise marijuana for recreational use could have negative economic repercussions. He urged opponents of cannabis to rely on factual information rather than political motivations when discussing the issue.
Anutin highlighted the benefits that cannabis has brought to the medical field and the economy. “For those claiming that medication costs have risen due to treating marijuana-related conditions, it’s important to note that many have recovered from cancer using cannabis and numerous others now enjoy an improved quality of life,” he stated. He further mentioned that cannabis has aided in the recovery of patients with Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s, emphasizing the economic contributions of the cannabis industry.
Anutin also stressed that those pushing for the recriminalisation of marijuana will need to address the concerns of individuals and businesses that have invested in the cannabis trade. He pointed out the significant investments made in the industry, suggesting that reversing the legal status of marijuana would have far-reaching consequences.
At a press conference held on Tuesday, officials and stakeholders from various sectors gathered to discuss the implications of the proposed policy change, underscoring the widespread impact such a decision could have on the nation’s economy and public health.
