Key Election Bills Become Effective

The statutes, one pertaining to political parties and the other to MP elections, were published after their enactment and a royal order by His Majesty the King.

After being modified and approved by the legislature, they took effect on Sunday. The legal modifications reflect the move from a single-ballot to a dual-ballot system.

The passage of the two bills gives legal justification for Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha to dissolve the House and call elections.

If the MPs’ four-year tenure expire on March 23, as scheduled, the next election will be held within 45 days, or by May 7.

However, if the House is dissolved before to March 23, the election will take place 45 to 60 days following the dissolution.
