Thailand as a piloting project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

On June 22, 2022, Hua Hin City Mayor Mr Nopporn Wutthikul announced that Hua Hin had become one of the Asian partners of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM); which aims to balance climate change and the transition towards a low carbon city. The city of Hua Hin is responsible for its region’s environmental management and has been monitoring trends in environmental changes that affect global warming.

The city of Hua Hin was ready to focus on carbon emissions, so he joined the project to expand the carbon footprint of local government organizations and move towards becoming a decarbonized city. From 2015 to 2017, the city joined the project with the Greenhouse Gas Management Organization for four consecutive years. It was preparing to find Hua Hin’s greenhouse gas amount for the mechanism, as well as set up various environmental control measures to achieve results as 2018, Hua Hin was selected as a global green city by the United Nations (UN) as the goal. It is hoped that Hua Hin will become a green city and win the honour of a model tourist destination.

In 2021, Hua Hin City had already participated in the Liveable City Project and won the National Award in the One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) presented by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2021-2022 in recognition of the city’s contribution to climate protection. With the determination and vision of Hua Hin City to solve environmental problems, local institutions are interested in participating in environmental protection, including Jakarta-based GCoM Indonesia, which has coordinated to join as one of the alliance cities.

In addition, on May 24, the City of Hua Hin signed a contract to join GCoM, the world’s largest coalition of voluntary local governments, to fight climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. And on June 15, the Mayor of Hua Hin and the representatives of the city government in Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO) jointly attended the GCoM Asia project kick-off meeting in Bangkok. It discussed it with greenhouse gas management agencies across Asia on greenhouse gas reduction and mitigation. For energy use, Thailand has 3 pilot cities participating, including Hua Hin City, Nonthaburi Province and Suphan Buri Province.

“Hua Hin City Government is delighted and ready to become a pilot city to join GCoM and work with communities worldwide to help address global warming affecting all regions. According to the Hua Hin Mayor’s Policy, making Hua Hin a City of Happiness intends to help Thailand achieve its carbon emission reduction goals in line with the National Climate Change Commitment and participating in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and COP26.” Nopporn said.
