A 46-year-old pickup truck driver who sustained critical injuries after being struck by falling concrete from an aging flyover on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon province has died, according to local reports on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.
The incident occurred early Tuesday morning on the outbound side of Rama II Road near the entrance to Samut Sakhon. Large chunks of concrete, estimated at around 30 cm wide and 50 cm long, fell from the Mahachai-Krathumbaen flyover and crashed through the windshield of a passing vehicle, striking the driver directly. The flyover is reported to be approximately three decades old.
The victim, identified as Amnat, was rushed to Vibharam Samutsakhon Hospital before being transferred to Samut Sakhon Hospital for further treatment. Doctors attempted to repair internal damage, including a ruptured liver and abdominal bleeding, but he succumbed to his injuries around 9:00 p.m. that evening.
Initial investigations by transport authorities suggest that the concrete had detached from the structure of the old flyover. The precise cause of the structural failure remains under review. Public concern has since intensified over the safety of elevated roadways in the area, particularly along Rama II Road, where similar incidents have occurred in the past.
Witness accounts and social media posts reported the victim was en route to work at the time of the accident. Eyewitnesses described a scene of significant trauma, with emergency workers attending to extensive injuries, including deep lacerations and heavy bleeding.
Local MP Nattapong Sumanotham, who visited the scene and later the hospital, shared that the victim was a resident of tambon Phan Thai Norasing in Samut Sakhon and originally from Nakhon Sawan province. He urged authorities to enforce stricter safety inspections and called for accountability regarding public infrastructure maintenance.
