Thai Tourists Cleared After Cannabis-Luggage Mix-Up in Japan

TOKYO — A Thai couple narrowly avoided legal trouble in Japan after mistakenly collecting a suitcase containing 24 kilograms of cannabis at Suvarnabhumi Airport before boarding a flight to Narita Airport. The incident led to hours of questioning by Japanese customs officials before the couple was cleared of any involvement.

The tourists, part of a tour group, had been given two suitcases by their daughter before their trip. However, at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, they unknowingly picked up a black suitcase belonging to another traveler. The mix-up remained undetected until they arrived in Japan and realized they could not unlock the luggage. With assistance from their tour guide, they opened the suitcase and discovered the cannabis inside.

Japanese customs officials detained the couple for more than nine hours as they investigated the situation. Their story was ultimately verified, allowing them to continue their trip, though much of their itinerary had already been disrupted.

The original owner of the suitcase, believed to be a foreign national, reportedly contacted Suvarnabhumi Airport after realizing his luggage was missing. However, communication delays arose due to the daughter’s name being listed on the couple’s travel records. The owner is believed to have traveled on to South Korea.

The incident has raised concerns about airport baggage security, particularly regarding drug detection measures. Suvarnabhumi Airport officials defended their procedures, stating that existing screening technology had failed to detect the cannabis.

The couple’s tour guide has since advised travelers to double-check their luggage to avoid similar incidents. Meanwhile, authorities have yet to determine whether legal action will be taken against the suitcase’s original owner.
