Thai army briefs diplomats over border landmine blast

BANGKOK — The Thai Army convened military attachés from 47 countries, including Cambodia, on July 22, 2025, to present its account of a landmine incident that injured three Thai soldiers near the Cambodian border. The briefing, held at army headquarters, marks a significant step in Thailand’s effort to internationalize its dispute with Cambodia over the use of landmines in a contested area.

According to Lieutenant General Kamchai Wongsri, head of the Army Intelligence Department, the mines were allegedly planted by Cambodian troops in the Chong Bok area of Ubon Ratchathani Province, a move that Thailand claims violated both its sovereignty and the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use of anti-personnel landmines.

Cambodia has firmly denied the allegation. In a statement issued by its Foreign Ministry the same day, Phnom Penh accused Thai soldiers of crossing into Cambodian territory and triggering pre-existing mines. It also challenged Thailand to submit the case to the International Court of Justice if it believes international law was breached.

The dispute follows a recent escalation of tension between the two countries, with both sides trading accusations over border violations and territorial claims.
