Thailand targets cannabis gummies in new health crackdown

The Thai government has launched a nationwide crackdown on cannabis-infused products, with a specific focus on gummies that pose a potential risk to children and adolescents. The move, announced on July 14, aligns with existing policies that limit cannabis use to strictly medical and research purposes.

According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Sasikarn Watthanachan, the Ministry of Public Health has ordered the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and local health offices to step up inspections across the country. Businesses found selling or producing cannabis-laced food and beverages without proper licenses may face criminal charges, fines, or license suspensions. Several establishments have already been penalized following joint inspections involving narcotics control agencies.

Under current law, selling cannabis products without approval, inaccurate labeling, or exceeding legal THC limits can result in fines of up to 30,000 baht or imprisonment for up to three years. Products deemed unsafe or imported without permission may also be classified as contaminated, subjecting violators to further legal consequences.

Authorities have issued specific warnings to parents and caregivers about the dangers of cannabis gummies, which often contain both tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). While THC can produce short-term euphoria, it may also lead to side effects such as hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, and high blood pressure—especially in young or inexperienced users.

Sasikarn emphasized the importance of cross-sector cooperation in preventing the spread of unauthorized cannabis products and reducing public health risks. Officials involved in the campaign include representatives from the FDA, provincial health authorities, and police working under the Ministry of Public Health’s directive.
