Man Killed by Own Grenade in Surat Thani

A 35-year-old man died on the morning of Sunday, May 19, in Surat Thani province’s Tha Chana district after a grenade he attempted to throw at his former girlfriend’s residence exploded in his hand. Authorities said the man had gone to the home intending to convince the woman to reconcile, but the encounter ended in tragedy.

The man, identified as Mr. Surapong, threw an M26 grenade at the house after failing to persuade his ex-girlfriend, Miss Kan-orn-pat, to resume their relationship. The grenade initially failed to detonate, prompting him to retrieve it and attempt a second throw. It exploded before he could do so, killing him on the spot.

Three elderly relatives of the woman, who were present in the house, sustained injuries from the blast. Miss Kan-orn-pat managed to flee into the house and was unharmed, according to local reports.

Police and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit later found 500 grams of crystal methamphetamine—commonly referred to as “ICE”—in a plastic bottle inside Mr. Surapong’s damaged vehicle. Records show he served a five-month prison sentence in 2020 for a drug-related offense.

Officials at the scene included local law enforcement and bomb disposal personnel who secured the area and began an investigation into the incident and the source of the narcotics.
