Thailand to Review Visa-Free Entry Policy Amid Abuse Concerns

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has directed government ministries to reassess Thailand’s visa-free entry scheme, citing concerns over a growing number of foreign visitors overstaying and working illegally. The order was issued during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, according to government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsub.

The directive tasks the Interior, Foreign Affairs, and Tourism and Sports ministries with conducting a thorough evaluation of the visa-free policy. The review will consider potential changes to the maximum length of stay, aiming to balance the country’s tourism goals with national security and immigration control.

Thailand currently allows citizens from 93 countries to enter without a visa for tourism, business, or short-term work purposes. Under the existing policy, visitors may stay up to 60 days, with the possibility of extending their stay for an additional 30 days.

Authorities are responding to growing concerns that some individuals have exploited the scheme. Reports suggest that certain tourists have used visa-free entry as a way to operate unauthorized businesses, including tour services, restaurants, and small hotels—activities that contravene Thai laws.

Tourism stakeholders have urged the government to tighten oversight and adjust the framework to prevent misuse while continuing to attract legitimate travelers.

The issue was discussed during the weekly cabinet session held on April 22, 2025. Detailed implementation will follow after the ministries complete their assessments and propose amendments to the current policy framework.
