Chiang Mai Sets Guinness World Record for Largest Fawn Leb Dance Performance

Chiang Mai province has officially entered the Guinness World Records with the largest performance of the traditional Northern Thai fingernail dance, “Fawn Leb.” On April 18, 2025, a total of 7,218 dancers gathered in a synchronized display of cultural heritage, surpassing the previous record of 5,255 participants.

The event, which celebrated the 729th anniversary of Chiang Mai’s founding, took place at the Three Kings Monument in the heart of the city. With nearly 10,000 dancers gathered in the area, the streets surrounding the inner moat were transformed into a vibrant open-air stage, where participants, dressed in traditional attire, performed the intricate movements of Fawn Leb.

Organized by Chiang Mai province in collaboration with the Chiang Mai Women’s Association and various local community groups, the performance was a striking demonstration of both cultural pride and community unity. The Fawn Leb dance, which pays tribute to the royal traditions of Princess Dara Rasmi, a prominent figure in Lanna history, was executed with precision and reverence for its historical significance.

Among those in attendance were key cultural officials, including Minister of Culture Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol and Chiang Mai Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn, who were present as witnesses to the record-breaking event. To meet Guinness World Records standards, all dancers were required to perform the choreography in unison, adhering to strict timing and movement guidelines. The event passed the verification process, and the committee confirmed that Chiang Mai had broken the world record.

Following the achievement, Chiang Mai was officially presented with a Guinness World Record certificate, further highlighting the province’s dedication to preserving and promoting its rich cultural heritage on an international stage.

The event not only showcased the beauty of Thai traditions but also attracted global attention, reaffirming the importance of community engagement in preserving cultural identity.
