Transport Minister Details Nakhon Ratchasima Infrastructure Plans

At the meeting room of Luang Phor Koon Parisuttho on the 3rd floor of Nakhon Ratchasima City Hall, Transport Minister Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, alongside Deputy Minister Mrs. Monporn Charoensri, outlined key policies to Governor Mr. Chaiwat Chuenkosum and heads of relevant government agencies. The focus was on addressing traffic issues on Highway No. 2, Mittraphap Road, intersecting with Highway 202 near Sida Intersection, and reviewing the progress of high-speed and double-track railway projects through Nakhon Ratchasima city.

During the session, Mr. Suriya addressed the contentious issue of the Simathani Bridge demolition. Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Suraphong Piyachote, had recently discussed the matter with local MPs and stakeholders, leading to two potential solutions: constructing an underpass or raising the bridge. However, concerns about stopping at Nakhon Ratchasima Station have left the issue unresolved. Mr. Suriya emphasized the local preference for an elevated road and vowed to pursue this solution, noting that an underpass would likely be unacceptable to residents.

To move forward, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has been tasked with designing and budgeting for the project, ensuring there are no delays. The Ministry of Transport is committed to adhering to public demands and delivering the necessary infrastructure upgrades.

In addition to railway developments, the M6 Bang Pa-in-Nakhon Ratchasima motorway project was discussed. Previous administrations had encountered issues with budget disbursement and route surveys near water sources and forest areas. These issues have since been resolved, allowing the project to progress. Local MPs are pushing for the motorway to connect further to Khon Kaen and Nong Khai provinces, a move Mr. Suriya supports to enhance regional trade competitiveness, particularly with routes extending through Laos to China and connecting to Laem Chabang Port.

There is also a call for establishing a commercial airport in Nakhon Ratchasima. However, Mr. Suriya indicated that high-speed train services might reduce the need for such an airport, though the use of Wing 1 as an airport could be considered if there is sufficient demand.

The meeting saw the attendance of various officials and stakeholders, highlighting the collaborative efforts in addressing the region’s infrastructure needs.
