Cambodian authorities rescued 10 Thai crew members from a Thai cargo ship that sank in Cambodian waters on Sunday, according to the Khmer Times. The container ship was traveling from Thailand into Cambodian waters when it went down between Vang and Manas islands in Koh Kong province. The cause of the sinking has not yet been confirmed.
All crew members were safely transported to Sihanoukville by a speedboat operated by a local volunteer rescue team. The crew members are currently staying at a hotel near the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port. A local official in Preah Sihanouk stated that they will inform the Thai Embassy in Cambodia to file the necessary documents with the General Department of Immigration, as all their documents were lost in the sinking.
The rescued crew members have been identified as Sopon Wantong, Sorasak Sasrimuang, Santina Nagara, Preecha Panchoo, Prakob Vechkit, Adisak Boonkun, Daurang Palnak, Santi Boonya, Arichai Jairak, and Worrathun Chimsawat, ranging in age from 30 to 70.
According to a preliminary investigation, the cargo ship sank due to water entering from the front of the vessel. Experts will continue to investigate to determine the exact cause of the sinking. The official confirmed that the sinking was not weather-related, as the sea was calm at the time of the incident.
