BMA Reviews Bangkok Electric Boat Service

Due to low passenger numbers and high running expenses, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is reconsidering the Khlong Saen Saeb electric boat service, which was established as an alternate transportation option for bus commuters to escape rush hour gridlock.

According to officials, the service, which provides a free 11-kilometer travel between Wat Sriboonruang pier and the Min Buri district office pier, has an average of 400 customers every day.

Officials suspect that the slow speed of the electric boats, as well as the lack of publicity, may be reasons in the low patronage.

The contract for a private business to manage the route is slated to expire in September 2025, and the BMA is presently considering whether the project should be continued or scrapped.

The BMA will also launch a 5-kilometer Khlong Phadung Kasem line from Hua Lamphong station to Thewarat Market in November 2020. Due to limited popularity among commuters, it was terminated in September of the following year.

There is no commercial enterprise interested in operating the service.
