Saturday, November 19, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha. During the meeting, Xi complimented Thailand for hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting.
Additionally, he emphasized the millennia-old affinity between China and Thailand, as well as the brotherhood between their two peoples.
Since the establishment of China and Thailand’s comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership ten years ago, their longstanding relationship has grown stronger. Xi said that the cooperation has continued to flourish and that bilateral ties have reached a new stage of growth.
At this new historic juncture, China stated that it will cooperate with Thailand to advance the special relationship that “China and Thailand are like one family.”
In return, the Thai prime minister conveyed heartfelt congratulations on the success of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and on Xi’s election as general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.
He said that Thailand supports Xi’s Global Development Initiative and Global Security Initiative, as well as China’s efforts to play a larger role in regional and global affairs.
President Xi arrived in Bangkok on November 17 to attend the 29th Meeting of APEC Economic Leaders. Xi urged the creation of an Asia-Pacific community with a common destiny in a speech delivered at the conference on Friday.
In his speech, Xi emphasized the need of adhering to the spirit of the Asia-Pacific family, caring for one another as if we were all passengers on the same ship, and slowly moving toward an Asia-Pacific community with a shared destiny.
In addition, he stated that the “Asia-Pacific miracle” was the result of extensive economic cooperation in the area during the previous several decades. In the hearts of the people, Asia-Pacific cooperation has taken root.
Saturday, Xi stated that free and open trade and investment are among the APEC’s objectives and guiding principles, as well as a crucial pillar in the implementation of the Putrajaya Vision 2040.
In addition, the Chinese president stressed the need of upholding real multilateralism and defending the multilateral trade system, upholding inclusivity for the benefit of everyone, and upholding open regional cooperation for the prosperity of the Asia-Pacific.
