In 2022, APEC will use the soft power of “Kulao Fish from Tak Bai”

The “Kulao Fish from Tak Bai” will be served at a gala dinner for the 21 APEC economy leaders in 2022, as disclosed by Deputy Government Spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek. This will take place during APEC Economic Leaders’ Week.

Dinner at the Royal Thai Navy Convention Hall will feature dishes from Michelin-starred chef Chumpol Jangprai.

Since salted Kulao fish is a native creation of the province of Narathiwat, this event will also provide a special occasion to highlight the achievements of the provinces along Thailand’s southern border. The fish is a GI product with a gentle, fluffy texture and a distinctive aroma, earning it the title “King of Salted Fish.” For this reason, foodies frequently acquire it as a memento at a price of 1,300 to 1,500 baht per kilogram.
The government spokesman went on to say that the Kulao fish is not only well-known in Narathiwat’s Tak Bai district, but also in neighboring Pattani province. The government in that area, through the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC), has done a lot to encourage locals to engage the seafood processing industry.

The SBPAC has also pushed for the construction of homes and other infrastructure necessary to house and employ more people to meet the rising demand for salted fish.

The potential of Thai food and products will be showcased during this year’s APEC leaders’ welcome, as stated by Spokesperson Ratchada, thanks to the idea of sustainable Thai gastronomy.

In accordance with the principles of the Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG), this is achieved by sourcing ingredients from throughout the country to increase national income.

The veggies for the Khao Soi, Tom Kha Gai, Tom Yum, and Khao Mo Kaeng will come from the Doi Inthanon Royal Project, the beef for the Khao Soi will come from Pon Yang Kham, and the fish for the Khao Soi will come from Tak Bai. As part of continued efforts to showcase Thai soft power in cuisine culture and the bountiful resources of Thailand, Khao Yai wines will also be presented.
