Belgian Cyclist Killed in Thailand Road Collision

A 68-year-old Belgian cyclist died after being struck by a pickup truck in Sattahip district, Chonburi province, on March 9, 2025. The driver, a 38-year-old woman, has been charged with reckless driving causing death and property damage.

The collision occurred at 10:20 a.m. near the J-Kasempol intersection on Highway 332. The victim, identified as Jean Antoine, was cycling when the pickup truck, which had an attached cargo container, hit him, sending him off the road. He suffered critical injuries and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Authorities stated that the driver, identified as Ms. Thip-apa, failed to see the cyclist on her left before the impact. Her vehicle subsequently veered off the road, and she sustained injuries requiring hospitalization. Police filed charges against her on March 10 after her condition stabilized.

On March 11, police announced plans to facilitate a meeting between Ms. Thip-apa and Antoine’s family to discuss possible compensation.

This incident is the latest in a series of fatal collisions involving foreign cyclists in Thailand. In February, a 78-year-old French cyclist died after being hit by a truck in Rayong province. Similar accidents in recent years have raised concerns about road safety, particularly for cyclists.
