Klong Toey Vendors Ordered to Relocate for Cleanup Effort

Street food vendors at Klong Toey Market 1 have been instructed to vacate their stalls by March 16 as part of an initiative to enhance the appearance of Ratchadaphisek Road and improve pedestrian accessibility in Bangkok’s Klong Toey district.

The move aims to address hygiene concerns, including waste disposal issues that have contributed to blocked drainage and unsanitary conditions. Water runoff from food preparation has also been cited as a factor causing slippery pavements, unpleasant odours, and bacterial accumulation. Vendors currently selling a variety of street food, including pork dishes, sweets, and fresh produce, are expected to relocate to designated areas within Klong Toey Markets 1 and 2 or other nearby markets.

Following the relocation, authorities plan to refurbish the pedestrian pathways. A similar vendor displacement took place between December and January at Lao Market in Klong Toey Market 2, where stalls were moved to improve infrastructure and aesthetics along Rama IV Road. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has stated that new hawker centres will be established to accommodate affected vendors in a more structured environment.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Jakkapan Phiewngam, accompanied by BMA officials and Klong Toey district representatives, recently inspected the area to oversee preparations for the relocation and infrastructure changes.
