Transport Minister Demands Penalty for Pink Line Safety Breach

Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit has called for the strictest penalties against the Pink Line train service operator following a serious safety incident last week. An accidental door opening while a train was in motion prompted this response, highlighting significant lapses in the Northern Bangkok Monorail (NBM)’s safety protocols.

Last Thursday, a passenger recorded a train door opening while traveling between Lat Pla Khao and Nonthaburi stations. The viral video shows the train high above the ground, with no passengers fortunately standing or leaning against the door at the time. An official onboard, alerted by an unusual sound, triggered an emergency stop.

Investigations revealed that a passenger’s bag had become trapped outside the closed carriage door. Unable to retrieve the bag, the control team instructed the train to return to Lat Pla Khao station. However, a miscommunication led to the door opening prematurely before the train reached the station.

Minister Suriya emphasized, “The safety of our public transportation cannot be compromised or negotiated.” He has directed the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) to hold NBM accountable. The MRTA will inform the operator that failure to enhance safety measures will result in punitive actions, including reduced performance scores and exclusion from future ministry contract bids.

Numerous officials and safety experts are closely monitoring the situation, underscoring the importance of stringent safety standards in public transportation.
