Tourists in Thailand are increasingly turning their attention to lesser-known cities, especially during the rainy season. According to data from the online travel platform Agoda, there has been a significant rise in hotel searches for these often-overlooked destinations. This trend reflects a growing interest among both local and international tourists to explore the diverse regions of Thailand.
Leading the list of popular lesser-known cities is Chanthaburi, followed by Nakhon Si Thammarat. However, Nakhon Nayok has seen the most remarkable growth, with search interest doubling compared to the previous year. Other notable destinations experiencing increased interest include Ratchaburi and Chiang Rai. Overall, these off-the-beaten-path cities have seen a 23% increase in searches compared to last year, highlighting their increasing appeal.
Pierre Honne, Thailand Country Director at Agoda, noted that the rising interest in less-visited Thai cities reflects a desire among travelers to delve deeper into Thailand’s diverse offerings. “Collaborating with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to highlight these destinations is clearly effective, as evidenced by their growing popularity,” said Honne. “Agoda is excited to support TAT’s efforts to showcase the cultural, historical, and scenic highlights of Thailand’s lesser-known cities.”
This trend extends beyond local travelers to international visitors as well. The top lesser-known cities attracting overseas tourists include Chiang Rai, Udon Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Chanthaburi, and Trang. The growing interest from international tourists underscores Thailand’s rich cultural and geographical diversity, indicating a global desire for unique and authentic travel experiences.
Officials and stakeholders have noted the positive impact of these trends on local economies and cultural preservation. The collaboration between Agoda and TAT continues to play a vital role in promoting these hidden gems, benefiting both travelers and local communities.
